Addison Truzy

Hello! My name is Addison Truzy, and I am part of the Winston-Salem Cohort for Wake Forest University’s College LAUNCH For Leadership Program! I was able to participate in the March Saturday Summit’s first-ever, “LAUNCHing Into Business”. This was a great Summit where we were truly able to learn more about the variety of job choices within the business world and break down some stereotypes dealing with business. The Summit was opened by Mr. Marcus Sanderlin, which gave great insight into what business actually is. I chose to go into the “Applying to Business School” with the WFU School of Business Partners and the “Interview Skills” breakout rooms with Mr. Ryan Cook. There was also another breakout room option, which was for using LinkedIn with Ms. Jasmine Williams. Lastly, we wrapped up the meeting with Mr. Jeff Walker, who talked about the possible internships with business schools.  Let me take you through what I learned!

The opening by Mr. Marcus Sanderline truly made me question how I viewed the business world. Typically, people view the business from a money aspect, but it also could be seen from a collaborative or entrepreneurial perspective as well. After the opening, my first breakout room was “Applying to Business School” with Mrs. Whitney Milhouse and Mrs. Emily Allen. During this breakout room, I learned what it takes to be in the WFU School of Business, how to be the best student possible within the business school, and the numerous job possibilities after school. Business doesn’t always mean the CEO/manager positions, it also could deal with finance, or statistics/data organization. I then moved on to the “Interview Skills” breakout room with Ryan Cook, which was my absolute favorite! I was able to perform a mock interview where I was asked questions about the activities that I participate in academically and socially. There were tips on how to remain calm and confident while being interviewed, such as having 3 reasons as to why you should have the position/scholarship. Coming into the interview with a few phrases already prepared and memorized can help you stay calm and be able to truly show your personality! We wrapped up the Summit, with a talk from Mr. Jeff Walker about scholarships. The talk consisted of ways to apply, resources that you can go to find scholarships, and what the organizations are looking for when granting scholarships.

This Summit was so insightful and very relevant to the career that I want to go into in the future. I would like to be a business attorney dealing with compliance and risk management. I would be in charge of making sure my clients know the most up-to-date business protocol and monitor/minimize risks for those businesses. Overall, leaving this Summit, I feel so much more prepared to go into my future career. I am very thankful for all the opportunities College LAUNCH For Leadership has provided!
