The College LAUNCH January Saturday Summit allowed both cohorts to come together for the first time, meeting on Wake Forest University’s main campus. The Wake Forest Department of Physics and Department of Engineering hosted Charlotte and Winston-Salem Scholars for a day of STEM exploration. President Wente, whose background is in STEM, spoke to students about her journey and encouraged them not to be afraid to fail, “if all of our hypotheses were right, we wouldn’t need to conduct experiments”.

Take a look at our day at Wake Forest below.

Students participated in a variety of hands-on experiments throughout the day. The experiment pictured above tested students’ hypotheses on the sounds made by varying lengths of tube.

In small groups, Scholars built motors from a battery, toured the Physical Research Labs, and participated in science demonstrations.

Our Scholars appreciated the insight faculty and grad students provided on how majoring in physics or engineering could open opportunities for their desired career paths later on. The January Summit was a definite success, no experiment needed!

We look forward to the next College LAUNCH Saturday Summit in February where Scholars will come together to Discover Wake Forest University. View all Saturday Summit dates.
