Hello everyone! My name is Ronni Butts and I am a junior at Northside Christian Academy. I am a College LAUNCH member in the Charlotte cohort. On April 23rd, I had the opportunity to participate in the Saturday Summit-themed “MEDucation Day.”

During this Saturday Summit, we were exposed to different presentations discussing different career opportunities within the medical field. Throughout our time, we were all placed into breakout rooms with different speakers to share what they have learned studying in their field. The first breakout room’s topic was about being a Physician’s Assistant (PA). We received a presentation by an experienced doctor along with a current student studying to be a Physician’s Assistant. Next, we had the opportunity to speak to three CRNAs. They gave us an in-depth explanation of their job, along with the other jobs closely related to that profession. They also gave us a demonstration of how CRNAs induce patients with anesthetics, which I found especially interesting. Next, we had a Ph.D. student speak to us about her experience in furthering her education in the medical field. Finally, we were presented with a mock case for a patient. As a group, we figured out what caused his symptoms and diagnosed him with an illness.

Although I currently do not have an interest in pursuing a medical career, this summit has opened my eyes to more knowledge about the medical field that I did not know previously. If I ever decide to change my career path, I can always look back on today’s summit and think about all of the careers I learned about! I had never considered all of the different jobs that the medical industry offers, so this was a very interesting and insightful experience!
