College Search Q&A
At the November Charlotte Saturday Summit, Scholars learned about different types of colleges and universities and how to choose the right school for their futures. During the Saturday Summit, LAUNCH alumni participated in a panel and shared their takeaways from the college application process thus far.
We asked three Young Leadership Executive Board members about their college search and how they chose the schools they applied to. The YLEB members are all alumni of the College LAUNCH Charlotte 2022-2023 cohort.
As YLEB members, these leaders have met all requirements to graduate from the College LAUNCH program including presenting a Youth Participatory Action Research project, writing at least 7 prompted journal entries, and attending at least 8 of the 9 Saturday Summit workshops. Now that they’re college prep experts, they give back by volunteering their time and mentoring current College LAUNCH Scholars.

Q: What are the top three schools you’re applying to?
Charissa: NC State, Wake Forest University, and UNC Chapel Hill
Jia: Wake Forest University, Boston University, and University of Michigan
Hannah: University of Virginia, Wake Forest University, and Georgia Tech
Q: What is your planned major:
Charissa: Biochemistry or Molecular Biology
Jia: Environmental Science
Hannah: Environmental and Biosystems Engineering
Q: What are your top 3 deciding factors when applying to schools?
Charissa: Student demographics, student clubs/organizations, and location.
Jia: Cost, research activity, and location
Hannah: Sustainable campus initiatives, location, and size of school.
Q: What was your favorite College LAUNCH memory?
Charissa: Definitely Discover Wake Forest Day. We got to meet the admissions counselors at Wake and participate in an admissions session. [Scholars also got a tour of Wake Forest’s campus, ate at the dining hall, and heard from a panel of College LAUNCH alumni who are current Wake Forest undergraduates.]
Jia: The YPAR project which I did on sustainable fashion. I loved it because we got to research and connect our topic to policy and advocacy
Hannah: The YPAR project. My topic was “how is feminism prevalent in North and South Carolina high school girls”. It was awesome to collaborate on a research project with other women.
